Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Megaproject: Unveiling Four Major Sub-Projects and the Construction Innovations Used

Saudi Arabia has launched one of the most ambitious development projects in the world, known as NEOM. Announced in 2017, NEOM is part of the grand Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil. This project is not only a symbol of economic transformation but also a representation of how technology and sustainability can synergize to create a futuristic city.

The NEOM project is located in the northwest region of Saudi Arabia, spanning 26,500 km² along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba coasts, bordering Jordan and Egypt. This strategic location makes NEOM a bridge between Asia, Europe, and Africa, thus opening significant opportunities for international trade and investment.
NEOM is designed as a city of the future that integrates cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and modern living. The city is expected to become a global innovation hub in various sectors, including energy, transportation, biotechnology, food, entertainment, and media. The project aims to create an environment where humans and technology can collaborate to enhance the quality of life.

4 SUB PROYEK NEOM
The NEOM Project consists of several major sub-projects, each with specific focuses and goals. The four main sub-projects of NEOM are THE LINE, Trojena, Oxagon, and Sindalah. Here is an explanation of each sub-project:
1. THE LINE

THE LINE is a linear city concept spanning 170 km with a width of about 200 meters, without cars and carbon emissions, designed to accommodate up to 9 million residents. The city will be built along a straight line and will utilize high technology to ensure sustainability and efficiency.
2. Trojena

The Trojena project, part of the NEOM mega project in Saudi Arabia, is a mountain destination designed to offer a unique experience in the desert. Trojena is a component of NEOM’s regional plan, located 50 km from the Gulf of Aqaba coast in the heart of our natural area. Its elevation ranges from 1,500 meters to 2,600 meters above sea level and covers an area of nearly 60 km2
3. Oxagon

Oxagon is a futuristic industrial hub designed in the shape of an octagon, located along the Red Sea. It will be one of the largest seaports in the world and a logistics center that integrates advanced technology and sustainability. This octagon-shaped port city is situated on the Red Sea coast in the northwest region of Saudi Arabia.
4. Sindalah

Sindalah is a luxury resort island that will serve as the maritime gateway to NEOM. Designed to be a premier destination for elite tourists, the island will offer a range of luxurious facilities and exclusive experiences. The project utilizes artificial island construction.

Construction Technologies Used
• Modular Construction

Modular construction is a building method where components or modules are manufactured in a factory and then assembled at the project site. Modular construction is utilized in the NEOM project because it allows for faster construction times, the implementation of futuristic infrastructure, minimized on-site activities, and energy efficiency.
• Floating construction

The floating construction used in the Oxagon sub-project of NEOM involves building structures on the water surface, such as seas, lakes, or rivers, using floating platforms. Floating construction is employed in NEOM due to its advanced floating platforms and stabilization systems that can support the successful realization of the Oxagon sub-project.
• Artificial Island Construction

Artificial island construction used in the Sindalah sub-project of NEOM involves the land reclamation process, where materials such as sand and rock are deposited to create new land over water.

The NEOM project is not just about physical construction but also represents a vision for a future where technology, sustainability, and humanity can evolve together. With this ambitious plan, Saudi Arabia hopes to position itself at the forefront of global innovation, attracting talent and investment from around the world. NEOM is a tangible example of how grand visions can transform not only a region but also pave the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for all of humanity.
